Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush: How to Use It for Blepharitis, MGD, Chalazia & Demodex - Includes Video
Learn how to use the Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush, designed by a UC Berkeley-trained optometrist to help support eyelid hygiene for blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), chalazia, styes, Demodex blepharitis, and eyelash health.
What Is the Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush?

If you've ever wondered what the Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush is and why it's different from a regular cleansing brush, you're not alone.
I'm Dr. Tanya Gill, a UC Berkeley-trained optometrist, and I designed the Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush for my patients after years of treating dry eye disease, blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), recurrent styes, chalazia, and Demodex blepharitis.
Many of these conditions begin at one very important location: The eyelid margin. That's where the openings of the meibomian oil glands and eyelash follicles are located, making it one of the most important areas to clean as part of an eyelid hygiene routine.
Why I Created the Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush
For years, I found myself performing eyelid margin exfoliation during patient exams. Patients would often ask, "How do I maintain this at home?"
I wanted to create a precision tool specifically for the eyelid margin—not a facial cleansing brush and not a toothbrush. The result was the Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush, designed to help patients gently clean exactly where eyelid disease often begins.
What Makes the Brush Different?
The brush features flexible silicone bristles with just enough firmness to clean the eyelid margin.
You'll notice the brush has a slight amount of flexibility while still providing more structure than a toothbrush.
The bristles are designed to glide gently along the eyelid margin while helping remove debris around:
- Meibomian gland openings
- Eyelash follicles
- Eyelid margin buildup
The goal is precision—not pressure.
What Conditions Is It Used For?
The Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush is commonly incorporated into eyelid hygiene routines designed by eye care professionals for patients with:
- Blepharitis
- Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
- Chalazia
- Styes (hordeola)
- Demodex blepharitis
- Recurrent eyelid inflammation
- Eyelash follicle hygiene
- Waterline makeup buildup
Your eye care professional can determine whether the brush is appropriate for your individual condition.
Always Use a 10× Lighted Magnifying Mirror
The eyelid margin is extremely small. For accuracy and safety, I recommend using a 10× lighted magnifying mirror every time you use the brush.
Good visualization allows you to target the eyelid margin instead of accidentally touching the surface of the eye. The brush should glide gently along the eyelid margin.
It should never be pushed into the eye.
It's Normal if Your Eyes Water
One of the first questions patients ask is, "Why are my eyes watering?" That's completely normal. Cleaning the eyelid margin may feel:
- Ticklish
- Slightly unusual
- Stimulating to the tear reflex
A small amount of watering during use is expected for many patients. The goal is a gentle glide—not aggressive scrubbing.
Always Use the Brush with a Cleansing Oil
The Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush should always be used with one drop of a We Love Eyes® Cleansing Oil.
The cleansing oil provides lubrication so the brush glides comfortably along the eyelid margin while helping lift away oils and debris.
Never use the brush dry.
Which Cleansing Oil Should You Choose?
Different cleansing oils can be incorporated into different eyelid hygiene routines depending on your eye care needs.
Tea Tree Eyelid & Eyelash Cleansing Oil (Brown Label)
The Brown Label Tea Tree Eyelid & Eyelash Cleansing Oil is commonly used in routines for patients managing:
- Blepharitis
- Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)
- Chalazia
- Styes
- General eyelid hygiene
Tea Tree Eyelid & Eyelash Makeup Remover Oil (Teal Label)
The Teal Label Tea Tree Eyelid & Eyelash Makeup Remover Oil is ideal for patients who wear eyeliner along the waterline. Waterline eyeliner can leave cosmetic buildup near the openings of the meibomian glands.
Deep cleaning the eyelid margin regularly helps remove makeup residue and supports healthy eyelid hygiene.
Rosemary Eyelid & Eyelash Cleansing Oil (Green Label)
The Green Label Rosemary Eyelid & Eyelash Cleansing Oil is often chosen by patients focused on eyelash hygiene and eyelash follicle care. Healthy eyelash follicles begin with a clean eyelid margin.
For patients looking to support overall lash health as part of their daily eyelid hygiene routine, rosemary cleansing oil is an excellent option.
A Simple Eyelid Hygiene Routine
For many patients, an eyelid hygiene routine may include:
- Apply one drop of cleansing oil to the Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush.
- Using a 10× lighted magnifying mirror, gently glide the brush along the eyelid margin.
- Follow with an eyelid and eyelash foaming cleanser to complete the double cleanse.
- Rinse thoroughly with water and pat dry.
This routine helps remove:
- Makeup residue
- Oil buildup
- Debris
- Environmental pollutants
- Residual cleansing oil
while supporting a healthy eyelid skin barrier.
Why the Eyelid Margin Matters
The eyelid margin is one of the smallest yet most important structures in eye health. It's where:
- Meibomian glands release oil into the tear film.
- Eyelashes emerge from their follicles.
- Debris, bacteria, makeup, and inflammatory material can accumulate.
Keeping this area clean may help support long-term eyelid health and improve the comfort of patients managing chronic eyelid conditions.
Final Thoughts
The Eyelid Margin Scrub Brush was created to help patients perform precise eyelid hygiene at home.
When paired with the appropriate We Love Eyes® Cleansing Oil and used with a 10× lighted magnifying mirror, it becomes an important part of many daily eyelid hygiene routines.
Whether you're managing blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, chalazia, styes, Demodex blepharitis, or simply want healthier eyelids and eyelashes, consistency is key. A gentle daily routine can go a long way toward supporting healthy eyelids, healthy lashes, and long-term eye comfort.
