Preservative Free Eye Creams for Healthy Eyelid Skin: Options and Tips from We Love Eyes

Do You Have Any Eye Creams That Are Preservative Free?
When it comes to dry eyes and other ocular surface diseases, using products that are preservative free are certainly more beneficial when compared to equivalent products that contain preservatives. To be clear, preservatives ARE NEEDED to keep products SAFE from bacteria, yeast and mold during use. There are certain ways to get around this of course. You've all seen preservative free artificial tears in unit vials and unique dropper bottles. In terms of eye cream, a formula that contains NO WATER can be preservative free. No water, hence - no place for bacteria, yeast or mold to grow!
Understanding the Need for a PRESERVATIVE FREE EYE CREAM
The eyelid skin is 4X thinner than the rest of the face and its skin barrier can be vulnerable to irritation and damage from certain ingredients. The eyelids also sit adjacent to the tear film which is also an important consideration as the eyelid - tear film junction often touch. How many times have you applied eye cream and it gets into the eyes? I would guess enough to know that it happens. A PRESERVATIVE FREE EYE CREAM is designed to support the natural protective barrier without compromising the health of the tear film and meibomian glands. I'm always mindful of preservatives especially with my patients with SENSITIVE EYES.
We Love Eyes Preservative Free Eye Creams
At We Love Eyes, I offer 2 eye creams that are preservative free. Ideal for SENSITIVE EYES and of course eyes with ocular surface disease like dry eyes / MGD.

EYE EYE F™ EYE BALM (F BALM)
F BALM is designed to support a dry and mature eyelid skin. It contains essential fatty acids and botanical vitamins that are supportive to the eyelid skin barrier which is "older" and more prone to a dry texture. This PRESERVATIVE FREE EYE CREAM is an occlusive repair concentrate, making it an excellent choice for intense moisturizing and prevention of trans epidermal water loss.

P.M. EYELID BUTTER
P.M. EYELID BUTTER is formulated to address dry, flakey, red eyelid skin from a damaged eyelid skin barrier. This type of eyelid skin usually is the result of eczema, allergies, eye rubbing or makeup/face products that strip the natural lipid layer of the epidermis. It's a PRESERVATIVE FREE EYE CREAM with a specific ceramide to fatty acid to triglyceride ratio to get the job done. It's helped so many of my patients with that dry, flakey, red, damage eyelid skin from hot compresses.

How to Incorporate a PRESERVATIVE FREE EYE CREAM into Your Routine
Begin your routine by thoroughly cleansing your face and removing any residual eye and face makeup. Pat the area dry and apply a very thin layer of your chosen PRESERVATIVE FREE EYE CREAM under the eye area every night before bed. This will help to support the eyelid skin barrier and maintain moisture with just all the healthy ingredients. No preservatives. Complete your beauty routine for face.

Custom Emulsion Strategy
My most successful eye cream strategies is to teach my patients how to create custom emulsions for their SENSITIVE EYES. Blending allows one to combine your PRESERVATIVE FREE EYE CREAM choice with one of my other eye creams with targeted actives. Add F BALM or P.M. EYELID BUTTER (preservative free) to my other eye creams: URBANEYES™, SHRUBTOX™, or A.M. EYELID GEL (has preservatives). This approach allows you to create a custom emulsion that addresses specific concerns while reducing overall preservative concentrations while maintaining safety. Clinical Insights
It is important to remember that the eyelid skin has different needs that face skin. In my practice, I have seen that a well-formulated PRESERVATIVE FREE EYE CREAM can significantly improve the condition of the eyelid skin barrier, appearance of fine line and wrinkles, AND ocular health. It's a win-win-win. Remember that epithelium takes about 28 days to fully cycle, so it will take about that amount of time to see and feel results.
