Sometimes they can be synthetic - made in a lab from a plant source. In both cases, the ingredient also needs to be eye safe. To me, eye safe ingredients mean that they will not harm the tear film or meibomian glands or eyelash follicles. Actionable Tips for Mature, Dry Eyelid Skin

Start with a gentle cleanse of the eyelid area using a mild cleanser. My preference for washing the eyes including removing eye makeup will always be the double cleanse method. Pat your skin dry to apply a small amount of Eye Eye F Eye Balm. Melt the balm between clean fingertips and apply a very thin layer to the eyelid area: lower, upper. Gently rub into the eyelid skin. Just avoid tugging and pulling.
