Hello, dear readers! If you're experiencing dry eyes, you're not alone. Many of my patients have similar concerns, and it's crucial to ask the right questions during your eye exam. Below, I've organized some essential questions to discuss with your optometrist to ensure your eyes are getting the care they deserve.

Essential Questions to Ask

  • Do I have dry eyes?
Getting an official diagnosis is key.
  • If so, what type of dry eye?
There are 2 choices: aqueous or evaporative dry eye.
  • What could be causing my dry eyes?
Understanding the root cause is the first step towards your optometrist creating a personalized treatment plan.
  • Are there lifestyle factors contributing to my symptoms?
Discussing daily habits and environmental factors can shed light on triggers.
  • Do I have any underlying conditions?
Some systemic conditions, such as autoimmune disorders (i.e. diabetes), can affect tear production.
  • What treatment options are available?
From preservative free artificial tears to prescription medications to energy devices – learn about the various therapies.
  • Should I modify my diet or hydration habits?
Proper nutrition and hydration can sometimes alleviate dryness.
  • Should I see a dry eye optometrist specialist?
See a specialist for the latest advancements in dry eye care.

Additional Tips for Managing Dry Eyes

It's also helpful to ask about:

  • Environmental adjustments such as using humidifiers or taking breaks from screen time 💻.
  • Proper contact lens care and alternatives if your lenses exacerbate dryness.
  • Long-term management plans for chronic dry eye conditions.

Remember:

Your optometrist is your partner in maintaining healthy vision. I don't get insulted when my patient asks questions. I get insulted when I'm expected to read your mind:) Don't hesitate to ask your questions. The best way is to make a list and hand it to your optometrist BEFORE the exam starts.
