Can Wearing Lash Clusters to Bed Cause Styes? Preventative Eye Care Tips from We Love Eyes
Can Wearing Lash Clusters to Bed Cause Styes?

You asked. Here's your answer. Hello, everyone! I’m Dr. Tanya Gill, OD, and today we’re talking about lash lovers: "Can wearing lash clusters to bed cause styes?" Let’s dive into the reasons behind this common eye problem and what you can do to prevent that ugly stye from happening in the first place.
Why Lash Clusters Can Be Problematic
Lash clusters are popular with my patients, but if not managed properly, they usually lead to ugly eye problems. No fun. And here’s why:
-
Accumulation of Bacteria:
Wearing lash clusters overnight is a bacteria trap. Trapping bacteria around the eyelid glands, increasing the risk of infection and stye development. 😷 -
Moist Environment:
Sleeping with lash clusters can limit air circulation, creating a moist environment ideal for bacterial growth. -
Product Residue:
Makeup (think eyeliner, mascara, foundation, concealer . . . ) and glue residue are common irritants to the eyelid and are usually why oil glands clog.
Tips to Prevent Styes When Using Lash Clusters
-
-
Remove Before Bed:
Always take off your lash clusters before sleeping to allow your eyelids to breathe. No exceptions. 😊 -
Proper Eye Care:
Clean your eyelids and lashes thoroughly to remove any eye makeup, face makeup, or debris. -
Quality Products:
Use high-quality, gentle lash adhesives and clusters to minimize irritation and bacterial build-up. -
Regular Breaks:
You just can't wear them constantly and everyday. Eyes don't like them! Give your eyes a break from lash clusters to reduce the risk of styes over time.
-
Remove Before Bed:
To Do List:
The use of lash clusters is a fun way to enhance your eyes, but sleeping with them on increases the risk of developing styes due to bacterial buildup in a moist environment. Always remove your lash clusters before bed, and thoroughly clean the lash clusters if reusing – and remove 100% of your eye and face makeup.
