Can Azasite Alleviate ACCUTANE‑Induced Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

Can AZASITE Help MGD from ACCUTANE?
Many of my patients on ACCUTANE develop symptoms of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Symptoms include gritty, dry eyes or fluctuating vision. These signs highly suggest an inflammatory response in the meibomian glands. One of my secret weapons for patient cases like this is AZASITE eye drops. I love them and let's discuss why.
How ACCUTANE Impacts Your Meibomian Glands
ACCUTANE is an oral medication for acne that reduces lipid production throughout the entire body, including the eyes. That improvement for acne can backfire on your eyelids. With less oil in your tear film, glands tend to clog. Those blockages worsen evaporative dry eye and predispose the eyelids to an inflammatory type response.
What Is AZASITE?
AZASITE is a topical antibiotic suspension. It contains azithromycin, which targets eyelid bacteria. Beyond its antimicrobial action, it appears to improve oil quality. Studies show a reduction in eyelid inflammation and an increase in gland secretion over time.
AZASITE in MEIBOMIAN GLAND DYSFUNCTION
Research indicates that a short course of AZASITE can thin inspissated secretions. And I definitely find this to be true in the clinic. Thinner oil flows more easily through the gland ducts. Patients report less irritation and fewer blockages after a few weeks of the initial treatment. It's a sticky eye drop that applies like a gel. Easy to use because it sticks to the eyelids - exactly where my patients need it. I have them place one drop into their eye and then wipe any excess onto their eyelids. It's a win-win.

Incorporating AZASITE into Your Routine
I recommend using one drop of AZASITE in each eye twice daily for two days, then once daily for the next 28 days. Combine this with my MGD CLEANSING SYSTEM, it's a winning combination that patients should explore.
