The EWG purports the key active contained within Syn-Hyan is fundamentally unsafe because it contains PFAS, even though trifluoroacetate (TFA) is not considered a per- or polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS).
PFAS are a class of synthetic chemicals that contain fluorine atoms bonded to carbons oriented along a chain. Whilst TFA is a simple organic compound that contains fluorine, it is not classified as a PFAS because it lacks the long, fluorinated carbon chain associated with PFAS.
